To add on to this she is slowly turning into a snake. I think this conflict is person v. But our true face is not revealed by our ancestors but by our actions.
I think how the character grew throughout the book gave an engaging ride for the reader. It was as though the two worlds were colliding.
I also enjoyed it when she went to a different dimension on a lawnmower rikshaw because of how detailed it was told.
This book felt as complete as a series could get, and it was wrapped up pretty well. The only thing I would have considered incomplete was the 4-month interval between the first and second books.
This book compared to another one of my favorite books, The Aru Shah series. Both main characters were ashamed of their fathers. For Kiran it was Sesha and for Aru, it was the Sleeper.
Dec 22, Julia rated it really liked it Shelves: arc , wndb , middle-grade , world-mythology. Magic and moral complexity and monsters and pink-sari-wearing resistance fighters on skateboards What a fun middle-grade adventure.
This is a great follow-up to the first book, and it sets up the next one quite nicely. I guessed a key plot twist fairly early on, but that in no way diminished how amusing the adventure was.
And [spoilers] any book that ends, after a major magical climactic battle, with our heroes shouting "To New Jersey! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

No one had called me that before, but I kind of liked it. All the while Kiranmala struggles to comprehend her ever-increasing feelings for the crown prince Neelkamal, she is repeatedly visited by his mother, who is urgently requesting her to return to the Kingdom Beyond.
The Raja of the Kingdom Beyond holds possession of the Poroshmoni Stone, and if the winner of the show is from the Kingdom Beyond, they will be granted the accompanying stone, the Chintamoni Stone, currently in the possession of the Serpent King.
However, if the winner is from the Kingdom of Serpents, then the Raja must surrender his stone to them.
Having these jewels paired together grants longevity, prosperity, and skies raining gold for the kingdom with both jewels.
The competitors of the game show will have to face a series of tests and ultimately have to end up slaying a rakkosh.
The rakkosh are currently imprisoned below the ocean under lock and key. Kiranmala is reluctantly taken to the Kingdom Beyond and forced to enter the competition.
She notices nothing is the same as before. Propaganda posters of her and Lal slaying malevolent rakkosh are plastered all over the streets.
Kiranmala is displeased with being known as a killer; she has never actually had the intention to take the life of any creature.
Nevertheless, winning the game show is the only way she will have a chance at saving Neel, reuniting the stones, returning to New Jersey, and most importantly, preventing her birth father from attaining the stones and wreaking havoc on the Kingdom Beyond.
Her friends, old and new, are here to help her execute this daring plan. Game of Stars is the second book in the fantasy fiction series written by Sayantani Dasgupta and is a must-read for middle to upper elementary children and above.
It certainly deserves a rating of five stars, if not more. In my opinion, this book made me appreciate the series and its characters even more.
Princess Kiranmala is a dynamic character throughout the story, and this book gave a beautiful expansion of her character, showing us the feisty fighter she really is.
I got to experience her emotions at a greater depth and understood her highs and lows so much, that I started relating to her and feeling what she went through the entire story.
This insight is necessary to enjoy the future installments of this series. That being said, several other characters were also introduced, giving a fresh perspective to the series.
I would absolutely recommend continuing to read this series! The author maintains the magical imagery and descriptive writing from the first book.
I felt that the mysterious thrill and edge-of-your-seat suspense was turned up a notch in this book! Game of Stars is a wonderful story and a memorable read!
Caroline reads too many books for me to keep up with her. So we have had quite a few conversations about what is ok to read, what to look out for if it's a new book, and to come talk to me if she feels uncomfortable.
This was the first book she has brought to me, saying she wasn't sure about. Full disclosure, I did not read the first book.
Caroline really loved it and so we bought it for her for Christmas. When she brought me this book to check for her, I felt awful. What did I get my baby into?
What did I get my baby into?? Turns out, just a tween read that starts talking about kissing. There has been a lot of hype around this series because the main character is an Indian girl from New Jersey, and it's not a book about being a minority.
For that, I applaud the author. We need more books mainstream that are not about being a minority in a white privileged world. We have plenty of those and there is nothing wrong with those kinds of books.
Except kids need more than that. They need to read about kids that look like them doing fantastical, imaginative, creative things.
And we wonder why Black Panther was such a big hit? The writing was alright. It was funny, and cute, but I think misdirected for this age group it was targeting.
Think age range. I also frequently felt like I was left behind because I do not have a background in Indian culture. Go figure.
I have mixed feelings about this, because how else do you learn about it then when you read it and love it? This is great exposure for Caroline.
On the other hand a lot of it I just didn't get. The biggest reason I knocked off a star is because of the Reality TV show. I don't like reality tv and I really don't like the idea of glorifying it for younger audiences.
The bit that Caroline was worried about was an interview between the main character and a tv anchor asking about her "Love interest" with another contestant.
There were also several billboards portraying Kiran about to kiss the brother of the guy she actually has a crush on. Love triangles?
At this age? It's not super overt, and not really a reason to keep your kid from reading this. But I did roll my eyes.
I loved the color and imagery of Kingdom Beyond. It felt vivid and fun. I do wish Caroline had waited a year to read these she just about to turn 9 , but I'm not losing sleep over it.
Apr 28, Ami rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy-mythology , diverse. It's been a while since I've read the first book, but I remember it being choppy and the plot is more concise in this one.
I like the fusion of Bengali folktales about demons and monsters in this series and I love that we're seeing more and more of other cultures in kids' books these days.
Game of Stars has lots of adventure, action, and girl power. I loved the Gulabi gang reference a real-life female empowerment gro I thought Game of Stars was a good, fast-paced sequel to The Serpent's Secret.
I loved the Gulabi gang reference a real-life female empowerment group in India with the pink sari-clad skateboarding girls. I feel like Kiran is a relatable character and acts her age.
My biggest frustration though is that some of the dialogue is childish. This happened a lot with the villains and sometimes, even Kiran. The humor, especially in the beginning, falls flat and comes off as trying too hard.
I couldn't stand some of the lines coming from the Demon Queen. There are multiple instances of her insulting Kiran, which is great because she's a villain and that comes with the territory.
But many of her insults were really lame like she's talking to a kindergartener instead of a middle-schooler: "Oh, fie on your underdeveloped cranium, you pea-brained tree goat!
Oh, I knew it was a mistake to come to you, you dim-witted moon reptile of a chit! It just seems to age down these books and I'm not liking it.
There were also some really cheesy new characters that I didn't care for like the famous tv anchors or the monkey captain. They're obnoxiously annoying and feel like filler characters.
The story overall was a fun ride though with lots of adventure minus some scenes that dragged on involving the aforementioned things. I loved all the imagery too.
This particular book involves a nationwide reality tv show with people thirsty for entertainment, so it was almost like an aged-down version of Hunger Games.
Also, props to whoever illustrates the covers for this series because they're absolutely gorgeous! Jan 07, Ms. However, Neel's mother, the burping, rhyming demon queen, finds her at school and says that Neel is being held captive by Kiran's serpent birth father, and only she can rescue him.
Not only that, but Neel does not want her to try. The people in that Kingdom have heard of her exploits, and her image is splashed everywhere.
Kiran finds out that she must not only free Neel, but must find two stones that are critical to keeping the balance in the kingdom.
It's not easy to get anything done, and even meeting up with Neel's brothers in the forms of an owl and monkey god and the Pink-Sari skateboarders causes more problems than it solves.
Kiran even needs to trick her father into providing a fang to break Neel out of his prison, but the final battle has a few surprises, and the story is not yet over.
Strengths: I enjoyed how Dasgupta took traditional Indian tales and adapted them for middle grades. Her notes at the back about girl power groups in Indian, and the influence of things like game shows and off beat products I sort of want to be Princess Pretty Pants for Halloween on modern Indian culture are interesting.
Weaknesses: This often slips into elementary levels of goofiness. My fantasy readers tend to be my most serious students, and they take their fantasy books very seriously!
